Steve Twine's Wootton Bassett 1st XI will be confident of competing well in the first league match of the season, at home to Colwall, following their emphatic cup win over Keynsham last Sunday.

They will be welcoming Richard Nienaver, a leg spinner from South Africa, into the club and a bowling attack which also sees Stu Smith given the opportunity to impress again following his solid performance on Sunday.

Last week's half centuries by openers Elliott and Chahal show promise of good early season form.

Healthy competition for places will mean that the 2nd XI will have to perform well on their away trip to Colwall.

Youngsters such as Joe Lukens, John Millington and Danny Stevens, in particular, will want to build on their winter coaching sessions with their county squads and the return to the club of wicketkeeper Steve Hale completes a strong-looking line up.

Including some exciting young talent, the 3rd XI entertains Bath Civil Service at Ballards Ash.

The captain, John Millington Snr, will be striving to help young players like Liam Guntrip, Paul Harris and Tom Powell to push for 2nd XI places sooner rather than later. The opposition has already called off the 4th XI match.

Sunday's Development Cup game away at Down Hatherley gives another chance for the youngsters to impress.
