PEOPLE came from all around the country to Westbury's transport extravaganza last Sunday.

Despite the poor weather about a thousand visitors flocked to the Westbury United football ground to take part in the day's festivities, which were organised by the Westbury Preservation Society.

Society chairman Keith Miller said: "It went really well. There were one or two exhibitors who didn't turn up because of the weather but that didn't affect our day at all everyone had a great time."

Motor vehicles of all kinds, even a lawnmower dating back to 1860, were on show at the event, which is now in its eighth year.

Special guests this year were Shrapnells Battery, a group which have appeared at events all over the country and abroad.

Mr Miller said: "They went down really well. They wear authentic 18th-century costumes and the cannons and rifles they demonstrated were very impressive.

"Everyone seemed to enjoy trying out the guns."

People from surrounding towns and villages were transported to the event in 1950s buses laid on for the occasion.

Once there, as well as taking in the sights and sounds, they could browse around the trade stalls and enjoy the various refreshments that were on sale.

Work will be starting soon on the organisation of the next event and the society is looking for volunteers who can spare some time to help.
