SCREWFIX DIRECT LEAGUE: WARMINSTER Town boss Andy Crabtree is hoping his side's encouraging display in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Bath City Reserves will not prove to be their Screwfix League swansong.

Crabtree's men led for most of the game at promoted City and the draw was their second in a week.

A 2-2 draw with former manager Gerry Pearson's Street last Wednesday saw them collect their first point of 2002.

The club finished with a measly nine points from 38 games and Crabtree is keeping his fingers crossed that the league's management committee decide not to relegate teams for the second season in succession.

He said: "It would be a blow to the club. We have had a bad season and, over 38 games, we have let ourselves down.

"We haven't done it against the other struggling sides. It is no good drawing with Bath City and then losing to Calne.

"I reckon a lot of it hinges on whether Taunton go up to the Dr Martens League. If they do then it has got to help us, with Yeovil Town Reserves resigning as well."

Crabtree will learn his own fate after the club's annual meeting on May 14 and wants to stay on as manager despite this season's baptism of fire.

He said: "I want to stay on. With a proper pre-season and summer I think I could do alright. I wasn't taken on until July last year and most of the best players had been snapped up.

"I'm quite optimistic about the future. I can understand if they don't want me, but we'll have to wait and see."

The Warminster boss was delighted with his side after the draw with promoted Bath on Saturday.

He said: "We played really well. The draw against Street gave us some confidence and I thought it was our best performance of the season.

"Their local paper said on the Friday that they were expecting a goal feast, but that made my team talk a lot easier.

"We went out there, kept our shape and should have won handsomely. We had two great chances before they equalised with 15 minutes to go."
