The combined performance and composure of Audi's flagship S8 quattro has blasted its way in to the world record books a feat accomplished with the driver wearing a blindfold!

Freelance motoring journalist Alistair Weaver topped almost 155 mph and averaged in excess of 140 mph for a mile in opposite directions to claim a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Doncaster-born Weaver, 25, chose the Audi S8 quattro along with an S6 quattro chase car for not only its stunning performance but also its sure-footed, high-speed composure.

"The blind land-speed record attempt required a high-performance car enabling me to reach in excess of 120mph within half-a-mile of the standing start," he said.

"But just as importantly, it needed to have high-speed stability."

Alistair drove alone in the S8 wearing a crash helmet with tape across the visor so his vision was totally restricted. Simple left, right, centre commands were sent by radio from Weaver's co-driver travelling in the chase car as the two Audis blasted down RAF Elvington's two-mile long runway.

Weaver said: "The S8's quattro four-wheel-drive drivetrain allowed me to get the power down very well off the start line, whereas a similarly high-powered rear-wheel-drive car could have slid off at an angle.

"Once up and running, it was a matter of making slight movements to the steering wheel from the brief, one-word instructions I was getting over the radio.

"Both Audis were magnificent in their relevant roles it was vital that the chase car had to be a vehicle capable of keeping up with my car."
