THE proposed one-way system for Bradford on Avon (Wiltshire Times, March 29) is a depressing re-hash of a scheme that has been rejected once already.

Less than two years ago county councillors rejected a near-identical scheme, which was proposed in connection with the Kingston Mills site development. It was rejected because of the environmental and safety impact on those people in the Mount Pleasant, New Road and Springfield loop. The case of people in the loop was backed by a 680-person petition gathered from signatories in the surrounding area.

The new proposal offers no material improvement over the last submission. The justification for the new proposal appears to be that European pollution levels are being exceeded in our gridlocked town centre.

The proposal appears to aim to speed up traffic flow round the town and spread the pollution over a wider area so enabling local pollution 'hot spots' to squeeze under the limit. As a result the blight of heavy traffic will be spread throughout the loop, and since traffic will be forced to travel further, even more pollution will be generated overall.

If this proposed 'solution' really is a result of a European requirement then what help does Europe offer to fix the problem? We need a much better long-term solution.
