WOOTTON Bassett based Railston the Shopfitter, one of the top 20 shopfitting companies in the UK by turnover, has introduced a programme of monthly visits by all its office staff to operational sites to see the work they administer actually taking place.

"It's all too easy in this business to become detached from what actually goes on out in the real shopfitting world," says managing director Jonathan Loader.

"Base staff deal with wages, ordering, equipment and so on, but it is not shopfitting until it happens on site, so everybody in the company now sees the work done and can relate to it."

Mr Loader's plan is for each office based member of staff to visit successively the early, midpoint and end of a job.

"My site visit to JJB Sports in Stirling was the most informative visit I have had so far," said Scott Esplin, of the estimating department, who lives in Swindon.

"I spoke to the fixers for a good hour, finding out about the fitting and construction of the bulkheads, etc."
