ORGANISERS of a vintage air day today hailed the event a success.

Around 7,000 people descended on RAF Kemble over the weekend for the Sixth Great Vintage Flying Weekend.

Enthusiasts came out in force to enjoy some 400 to 500 vintage and classic light aircraft from all over the UK and northern Europe.

On Sunday the RAF paid its own tribute the civil veterans with a flypast salute by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Spitfire and Hurricane.

Terry Booker, the event's operation manager, said: "It could well have been the largest meeting for British-built classics ever held.

"I'm overwhelmed by the attendance. I believe it was the largest ever gathering of aircraft and people for the event."

As well as a chance to get up close to the prize collection of planes, visitors were able to browse trade stands.

The event was part sponsored by the Met Office, which attended with its state-of-the-art mobile forecasting unit, as well as famous names such as Shell, Air Total and major titles from the aviation press.
