CHIPPENHAM Town Council has honoured two Chippenham citizens for their outstanding work for the community.

The town council announced last week that Robert Jones and Robert Thatcher would receive Civic Awards for their contribution to the community and to charity.

Robert Jones, 63, of Bruges Close, was honoured for his long years of service to the Chippenham Male Voice Choir.

He has served as conductor for more than 20 years.

He was proposed by Basil Raddy, who paid tribute to Mr Jones' drive and commitment, which he said played a major part in the choir's success, maintaining its popularity and enabling it to fundraise for charities at concerts.

The second award will be presented to Robert Thatcher, of Ashfield Road.

Mr Thatcher, 30, who has learning difficulties, was commended for his tireless fundraising for Mencap, and his dedicated work with the Gateway Club.

Mr Thatcher has raised more than £2,800 for Mencap since 1993, through his own efforts.

He is also a staunch member of the Gateway Club, a social club for adults with learning difficulties, where he helps to run activities.

He was proposed by Sheila Perry, who said: "He has worked hard over the past few years raising money for Mencap, and his work deserved to be recognised. So many young people get a bad press these days and it's nice to hear of someone helping his community."

Both winners will receive a certificate on Civic Sunday, September 8.
