CORSHAM FC scraped a a 1-0 victory over The Packhorse in the final of the Subsidiary Cup with a controversial late winning goal.

The all-Premier Division final was billed as a potentially high scoring affair after the two teams had shared 15 goals in their two league encounters, but as with both of the league's other finals the game failed to live up to the pre-match expectations.

Corsham FC made the brighter start, with Tim Jefferies' hopeful shot from distance dropping just over the bar after seven minutes.

In the 18th minute Corsham's Kevin Brown had a close range effort well saved by Packhorse goalkeeper Mark Ogilvie.

Midway through the half Packhorse were awarded a free kick 25 yards out, which John Ledgister curled around Corsham's wall only for goalkeeper Chris King to deny him with a fine stop.

In the 35th minute Packhorse had their best chance of the half, when Willie Elliott knocked a Mark Hutchings cross just wide of the target, and three minutes before the break Packhorse went close to breaking the deadlock when Steve Richardson's shot crashed against an upright.

At the start of the second period Corsham's Malcolm King hit the post with a spectacular overhead effort from a Tim Jefferies' corner. The game then stuttered from end to end, with chances being few and far between until Corsham's Malcolm King saw a goal bound effort cleared off the line by Paul Duckett in the 68th minute.

Ten minutes later Corsham's Mark Hutchings had a golden opportunity to put his side ahead but shot straight at goalkeeper Chris King from eight yards out.

Hutchings' team-mate Pete Humphreys went close a minute later, with Craig Gingell clearing his header off the line.

Corsham's winner came in controversial circumstances in the 85th minute. Steve Boore was taken down in the box by Geoff Goodway.

Simon Young blasted the penalty yards over the bar, but was given a second bite of the cherry when referee Julian Sattin awarded the kick to be retaken because goalkeeper Ogilvie had moved off his line.

Young made no mistake with his second attempt, finding the top corner with ease.

At the final whistle it was heartache for the Packhorse who up until the penalty had gone 445 minutes without conceding a goal in the competition.

Winning captain Andy Sibbick and manager Malcolm King received the Cup from league secretary Chris Clarke. Andy Sibbick received the player of the match award, which was sponsored by Westernsport of Chippenham.
