I SEE the town council is about to voice their objections to the Millennium Cross on the Abbey Wall (a short paragraph in last week's News in Brief).

Several weeks ago, I, among a great number of Malmesbury inhabitants signed a petition stating that the Cross should remain on the Abbey Wall. We feel strongly about this it should remain where it is. It is a symbol of our Christian faith and everyone should thankfully remember that we owe our way of life to the Christian beliefs whether one is a believer of the Christian faith or not.

I think we would all appreciate the real reason for the town council's objections to the cross. Could they please make it clearer to us mere mortals, who cannot understand why a Cross on an Abbey Wall should cause such consternation?

If it is thought to be a distraction I discount that. There are more distractions on the road itself to worry about than the Cross. Motorists have to keep their attention focused on the bumps along Abbey Row. The Cross is least of their worries.
