RAIL passengers in Swindon could benefit from a potential merger of the Thames Trains and Great Western franchises.

The Rail Passengers' Thames Trains Committee is meeting with the Strategic Rail Authority on May 21 to further discuss the move which will simplify operations at Paddington and result in greater service integration.

Leo Taylor, spokesman for the committee, said: "By merging the two franchises there may be possible benefits for passengers using lines between Didcot and Paddington."

The meeting, open to members of the public, is being held in Wrexham Park Stadium, Slough, at 1.15pm.

The consultation process, which started on May 12, is due to finish on June 4.

Joining the franchises may create extra capacity on the lines. But Mr Taylor said issues of train fares and competition also need to be considered.
