RUDLOE Community Centre had a busy weekend just a week after its official opening.

The £850,000 centre was opened a week and a half ago by district council chairman Brian Atfield in time to host a succession of community events over the holiday weekend.

Celebrations included live music, a karaoke and a jubilee quiz, all of which were held in the centre, which replaced the dilapidated Rudloe Social Club.

The centre is run by the community and used for activities like line dancing, mother and toddler groups and yoga. It boasts a bar, main hall and committee room and its modern facilities can be hired out for functions.

Last Saturday there was live music, clowns and face painting at the centre. Coun Atfield handed the keys of the centre to its chairman Grace McLaughlin and local resident Dave Alan pulled back the curtains to reveal a commemorative plaque.

"Everybody in the community loves the centre," said community association secretary Kathi Goulding.

After a four-year battle to replace the social club, work began last May. It was completed in January.
