A NEW £31,000 playground in Grittleton has been completed, thanks to a year of fundraising.

The fencing around the playground, on the recreation ground next to the village hall, was completed on Friday.

"It is fantastic and the playground we had before had been there over 20 years," said Vanessa Shipp, 35, who was part of the fundraising committee.

The playground has all the latest safety measures, an adventure playground section, a two-tower play system, swings for children and toddlers, a seesaw and giant slide.

It has been funded thanks to £11,000 from North Wiltshire District Council, £6,000 landfill tax credit from Viridor waste management, as well as £1,000 from Grittleton Parish Council.

The village hall committee gave £5,000, and the remaining £8,000 came from village fundraising.

A dinner on the run, visiting 12 houses took place last May and, together with a raffle raised £1,200.

A fashion show at Grittleton House raised £1,600.

The villagers even put together a tongue-in-cheek magazine called The Playground, and an auction raised £70.
