CHIPPENHAM people are being asked to name a development of new homes in the town's Malmesbury Road.

Westbury Homes is building 39 four and five-bedroom houses on land near St Nicholas' School.

The sale of the land has helped Hardenhuish School pay for its new sports hall and art block.

Ideas put forward so far have been Springfield Gardens, Avenue, Way or Close, or Meadow View or The Meadows.

North Wiltshire District Council has asked Chippenham Town Council for its views, but in a meeting on Thursday councillors decided to put it off, to think of better names.

"It would be nice to have a name that reflects the history of the school or the Hardenhuish Estate," said Coun Ross Henning, who grew up in Riding's Mead, close to the development.

Councillors are reluctant to rush in to naming the road.

"It seems that over the years there has been a lack of imagination in street names," said Coun Don Ellis.

Coun Philip Allnatt suggested listening to the public's ideas, and Coun Henning said it would be useful if anyone with a suggestion called the town council.

Coun John Scragg, a former Chippenham Mayor, said it might be an idea to leave the naming until after the World Cup finishes, should England emerge victorious.

Anyone with ideas can telephone the town council on (01249) 446699.
