CONSUMERS looking for the quality products Malmesbury is famous for will have no difficulty recognising the town's wares thanks to a labelling scheme launched on Friday.

The labels will enable shoppers to identify those products produced in the area.

The stickers were originally to feature on just food and drink, but enthusiasm for the scheme meant that has been extended to include crafts and furniture.

Sponsored by Lucent Technology, the labelling scheme was launched at the town hall on Friday evening.

The reception was opened by local TV actor James Grout and music was provided by the Malmesbury Sextet.

So far about 25 firms have joined the scheme and stores stocking the goods will display Made in Malmesbury stickers in their windows.

Nine-year-old Matthew Jordan, of the town's Walter Powell School, won a competition to design the Made in Malmesbury logo last year, with a design featuring the Market Cross.

The next step of the Made in Malmesbury scheme is to find new ways of boosting local businesses.

"If the will is there and the enthusiasm, who knows what we can come up with," said town council PR chairman, Catherine Doody.
