THIEVES made off with a car stereo and a steering wheel in two separate break-ins on vehicles in Sherston.

The break-ins happened last Wednesday night. Malmesbury police are linking the thefts.

In the first raid, thieves forced the lock of a blue Vauxhall Astra in The Tarters, making off with the car's steering wheel, and causing £500 damage.

On the same night, about 20 yards away, also in The Tarters, a Kenwood stereo CD player was taken from a yellow hatchback car. The stereo was worth £220, and thieves again broke in by forcing a door lock.

PC Phil Salsbury, of Malmesbury police, said officers have no witnesses and are keen to hear from people.

"We will be treating them as linked and we suspect that it is the same offender for both because it was in the same vicinity," said PC Salsbury.

He urged other car owners in the area who may have suffered break-ins, or attempted break-ins that night to contact him.

Anyone with information is urged to call PC Salsbury at Malmesbury police on (01666) 822222.
