PUPILS at Malmesbury School have taken to busking at lunchtimes after the school's main corridor was dubbed 'the street' by builders.

The pupils, sometimes alone, or in twos and threes, have been entertaining classmates with the impromptu music sessions in the school corridor.

Deputy Head Margaret Sutherland said the idea came from a visitor to the school, who had heard that builders from Bilfinger and Berger, who constructed the building, had given the main corridor a nickname.

Head of music Chris Bradshaw has co-ordinated the sessions, and now children are queuing up to play.

"It introduces a feeling of community into the street and an interest for the children at lunchtimes," said Mrs Sutherland.

The school opened at Gastons Road at Easter. "Because the main corridor is like a street we thought we would try to introduce some street activities," said Mrs Sutherland.

"It has been most successful when the weather has been unpleasant and the students have attracted audiences."

She said the school is looking to the children to perhaps provide types of street entertainment next year. "We are looking to maybe introduce that next term," she added.
