THE golden jubilee was celebrated in style across Malmesbury, with revellers making up for the absence of a main civic occasion.

Last month the town, Britain's oldest borough, looked like missing out on jubilee celebrations when the football club cancelled a party at its Flying Monk grounds.

However, townspeople rallied and celebrations took place at the football club and in Parklands, Newnton Grove, St Mary's Hall and Malmesbury Garden Centre.

Malmesbury town councillor Patrick Goldstone, who helped organise the events at St Mary's Hall, in Gloucester Road, on Monday, said: "We had a ball and the only real complaint was the rain the only bad weather we had over four days."

Festivities kicked off with a garden party at The Suffolk Arms on Tetbury Hill on Saturday, the same day as a tea party at Burnham House Residential Home.

On Sunday residents in Newnton Grove and Parklands held a street party.

On Monday the football club held a party and both The King's Arms and The Suffolk Arms hosting knees-ups.

The Smoking Dog in the High Street also had live music and the garden centre on Crudwell Road held a party on Tuesday.

On Saturday a jubilee coffee morning and plant sale is to be held at 1 The Bungalow, Bremilham Road, between 10.15-11.45am.
