WOOTTON Bassett recorded a convincing 102 run local derby victory in a very one sided Gloucester and Wilts League Division One game at the County Ground.

Swindon captain Will Nicholls won the toss and put Wootton Bassett in to bat.

On a slowish wicket and spongy outfield with large boundaries, it looked like a good toss to win, and a score of 170 plus would probably have been a good total.

Bassett needed to get off to a good solid start with openers Shama and Elliott.

Elliott was bowled in the third over by Stinchcombe not the sort of start Bassett were hoping for, but this brought the stylish Chahal to the wicket with the score on eight.

Along with Shama, he began to dominate the bowling and had put together an excellent partnership of 52 when the introduction of Nicholls to the attack brought instant success, removing Shama and John Clarke in quick succession, to leave Bassett on 72-3 in the 24th over.

South African Nienaber came in at number five and another partnership was needed.

Along with Chahal he duly obliged, putting on 74 in 16 overs before Nienaber was caught on the deep midwicket boundary for a useful 28.

Chahal quickly followed for an excellent 76 to leave Bassett on 149-5 with nine overs left.

Sean Clark, batting lower down the order came in at number seven and along with Neil Twine smashed the Swindon attack for 44 runs in only five and a half overs to push the Bassett total over the 200 mark, with Clark eventually going for a rapid 32 and Twine for 17, and Bassett were eventually bowled out for 211 in the final over.

Swindon's reply needed to be steady but an unfortunate run out off an on-drive by Compton meant that Woodward was on his way back to the pavilion with the score on only two.

This brought the experienced Baden to the wicket but with Andy Stevens continuing his impressive form with the ball, runs were hard to come by.

With a combination of tight fielding and Stevens' bowling, Compton became frustrated and was trapped lbw to Stevens trying to play a big shot.

Baden and Fox were quickly dismissed as well by the superb bowling of Stevens, and once the dangerous Nicholls was dismissed, albeit by a dubious decision, Swindon were in deep trouble at 40-4 in the 15th over.

Swindon never came to terms with the superior bowling and fielding display showed by Bassett, and were rather fortunate to have reached 109 in the 40th over before being bowled out.

All Bassett bowlers performed superbly, but the experienced Andy Stevens stood head and shoulders above anyone else, with match figures of 15-8-28-4.
