CALNE Carnival organisers are looking for more entries for next weekend's procession.

Preparations are well underway for the event, nicknamed the 'Calneval,' and there are already several floats from town groups booked to take part.

The procession next Saturday, June 15, starts at Porte Marsh Industrial Estate at 1.15pm and will make its way along Oxford Road, Wood Street, Curzon Street and the Strand before terminating at Station Road.

It will be lead by a Wiltshire Fire Brigade engine, followed by a luxury vintage car from the Atwell Wilson Motor Museum.

The car will carry Town Mayor Elizabeth Hitchens and the three carnival princesses Shona Harding, Louise Edginton and Rebecca Gillett.

Other entrants include the Devizes Major-Wrecks, the Southwick Scout Band, St Dunstan, Priestley and Holy Trinity Schools, Calne and District Guides, Calne Beavers, Key Day Nursery, the Lyndsay Howard Academy, Calne Players, the White Horse Leisure Centre and Somerfield supermarket. As well as the main carnival procession, a car boot sale is taking place in the car park between Somerfield and Sainsbury's from 9am to 12 noon and a fete is taking place at Marden House, from 1.30pm.

There will be an exhibition by the Major-Wrecks and the Southwick Scout Band, the Lions Club chair-o-plane and several charity and business stalls.

"If we get good weather I think it's going to be a raging success," said Tom Dobson of the carnival committee. We have been working on this since last summer doing bits and pieces and a lot of work has gone into it since the last carnival.

"Most of the entrants in the procession have come from Calne itself and we still have room for more."

Most of the money raised at the event will go to local charities but some will be kept back to go towards organising next year's carnival.

There is still time to enter the procession. Lorries, cars, motorbikes and individual walkers are all allowed. For details contact Mr Dobson on (01249) 817134.
