PAT Thrower will become the first female president of Calne Lions Club in its 30-year history later this month.

The club began accepting female members eight years ago but it is only now that a woman has been asked to take on the role. Mrs Thrower, 55, of The Pippin, will take over the presidency from Lion Ray Theaker on June 29. Her vice-president will be Les Long.

His 18 year-old son Brian is the club's youngest member. "It's a real honour to be the first," said Mrs Thrower, who works at Europa News. But I don't think of myself as a lady lion or a lioness, just as a lion like anyone else. I think like with most of these clubs they only started taking lady members in the last 10 years or so, and some still don't."

She added: "We have a really good club here in Calne. We all work hard but it's great to be able to raise money to help people who need it. I'm really looking forward to being president."
