FORMER England 'spy' Malcolm Crosby believes a recall for a Euro 96 villain could help Sven Goran Eriksson's men to victory over Argentina tomorrow.

Town's assistant manager was part of the England set-up during Euro 2000, compiling reports on the other teams in the competition for Kevin Keegan.

Although he has not been called upon to perform the same task in Japan and South Korea, Crosby has still been following events in Asia very closely.

He said: "It was fantastic to be involved in Euro 2000 and hopefully the chance will come again.

"As for the present set-up I'm very good friends with Sven's coach Steve McLaren and I know he'll be working hard to make sure the lads are prepared for the Argentina game.

"It is going to be an extremely tough match and the lack of movement against Sweden has to be a worry.

"The way England played in the second half of the Sweden game made it very easy for the opposition."

Crosby believes a tinkering of both system and personnel could help England's prospects ahead of the match.

He said: "Personally I think Gareth Southgate is unlucky not to be in the side.

"I think Rio Ferdinand looked edgy as part of 'a two'. Maybe another option to consider would be bringing in Southgate to play as part of a three, with Ashley Cole and Danny Mills operating as wing backs."

But Crosby believes it is vital for England to focus on their own preparations rather than worrying too much about Argentina.

He said: "Everyone knows they are a strong side but they are not unbeatable.

"And you take nothing for granted about so-called favourites in this World Cup.

"Senegal have beaten France and who gave the USA a chance of beating Portugal?

"Maybe some teams have thought they were in for a comfortable match only to find there was not the gulf in class that people were talking about.

"But I think the tournament as a whole so far has been tremendous. We have seen some really exciting games and the supporters over there certainly seem to be enjoying it. Let's just hope England are involved for as long as possible."

Former Town midfielder Alan McLoughlin is a target for Conference side Forest Green Rovers.

The ex Republic of Ireland international made around 20 appearances for Rochdale last season, having earlier turned out in a couple of reserve games for Town.
