SALISBURY Pubwatch is helping halve the number of drink-related crimes within the city, just three years after it was set up.

"We're still growing strong that's the message," said Bill Buchan, chairman of the Salisbury Pubwatch Scheme and licensee of the Anchor and Hope, Winchester Street.

The scheme is run in conjunction with the police, Salisbury District Council and Salisbury CCTV, which has proved an invaluable weapon in beating troublemakers.

Mr Buchan said: "Where people leave a pub in a bad mood, we have got that area covered by CCTV and pubs can be warned in advance before those people get to them."

He said the police figures show a fall of 50 per cent in drink-related crime in the city.

In the past three years, Salisbury Pubwatch has barred 13 individuals from members' premises.

The scheme operates within the city ring road but is attracting interest from publicans further afield.

The Salisbury scheme has 63 members, who meet every six weeks.
