Football fans who hang scarves and flags from car windows could face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points if police consider they pose a danger to other road users.

Sounding the car horn between 11.30pm and 7am when stationary could also land over-zealous fans a fine of £1,000. Swindon police road safety officer, Sgt Dave Melvin, said: "We don't wish to spoil the public's enjoyment of the World Cup and so far we have not had any problems, but motorists need to be circumspect about their actions. If we encounter any motorist we suspect has been drinking then we will breathalyse them."
