THE Fairford branch of the Royal British Legion marked its 75th birthday, the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the anniversary of D-Day with a special ceremony at the RAF base.
More than 60 members gathered to watch a Redwood tree being planted at the base in memory of fallen comrades in the D-Day landings of 58 years ago.
During the D-Day landings RAF Fairford played a pivotal role when it was used as a frontline base from where a fleet of gliders was launched.
Lieutenant Jake Martinez of 424th Air Base Squadron based at RAF Fairford said: "The ceremony was very well attended and it was a very emotional affair.
"Prayers were said for fallen comrades and the Redwood tree will serve as a permanent reminder of their service.
"The occasion was also used to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee and the 75th anniversary of the local Royal British Legion club it was quite an afternoon and thankfully the weather held for us."
