SWINDON boys basketball team will be among more than 100 children taking part in this year's Western Counties Area Youth Games.

The event is taking place at Millfield School in Somerset on Saturday and Sunday.

The 100 children will represent Swindon at the event, sponsored by Sport England. The council's lifestyle development team has put Swindon's team together, with financial support from Swindon's NHS Primary Care Trust and considerable help from more than 30 volunteers.

The youngsters have been chosen from school teams and sports clubs to compete in football, basketball, netball, tennis, tag rugby, swimming, cricket, athletics and hockey.

In 1998, Swindon won 11 out of the 19 events and last year competitors walked away with six gold medals, eight silver and four bronze.

Helena Cleverley, of the council's lifestyle development team, said: "The youth games celebrates the sporting achievements of young people and also highlights the benefits and the fun of being physically active."
