JULIA Drown visited an exhibition highlighting dangers posed to wild birds from BB guns, fireworks and litter.

The display in the Environmental Room at Lydiard Park was jointly organised by the South West Swan Sanctuary and Swindon Council's Ranger Service.

The MP for South Swindon said: "I would encourage everyone to go and see this exhibition. The injuries and death caused to birds from litter, fireworks and BB guns is frightening.

"The volunteers who help rescue birds from around the country deserve much praise as does Swindon Borough Council for supporting the project.

"I have had a number of constituents complain about the availability of BB guns and fireworks and I am collecting evidence about this issue."

Sue Hulbert, is a Countryside ranger for the council but is allowed time off to help run the sanctuary by rescuing birds such as swans, herons and cuckoos.

The sanctuary rescues and treats bird that have been injured and reintroduces them into the wild once they are recovered.

She said: "There have been a number of gun attacks in the last two weeks and a cob was killed by a shot in the back of the head. Fireworks and guns are too readily available and they can kill birds."
