EX-BATH City defender Colin Towler was satisfied with his first outing for Chippenham Town as he skippered his new team to a comfortable 3-0 win at Calne on Saturday 20 July.

The 32-year-old became the first of Tommy Saunders' nine summer signings in May and took the captain's armband at Bremhill View following Grantley Dicks' departure to Clevedon Town.

He felt his side had performed well, given the number of new signings and trialists on view in the opening 45 minutes.

Said Towler: "There were a lot of people out there making their first starts and it was an off-the-cuff performance as we haven't concentrated on any patterns of play yet.

"I thought it went okay. These games are just designed to get your fitness levels up and get to know the boys you are playing with.

"It is not always about the result, but 3-0 was very pleasing because you want to win every game you play. It is important to get into good habits and a good habit is winning games."

Pre-season friendly matches will come thick and fast for the Bluebirds ahead of their first game of the new campaign at home to Chelmsford City on August 17. They travelled to Corsham last night and take on Newport IOW and Yeovil Town next week.

Said Towler: "You finish a season at the end of April, then have a long break where you don't do too much, and then you're straight back into it again.

"We've been doing pre-season training for three weeks, but you need match fitness and that is what friendlies are all about."

Towler's former Bath team-mate Mark Badman was pleased with his goal and performance at Calne. He said: "It was the first goal I have scored for ages. I don't think I even had a shot for Bath last season."
