VOLUNTEERS are needed to help BBC Wiltshire Sound to complete a five- day challenge to create a sensory picnic area for children with disabilities in Devizes.

The radio station's afternoon presenter Graham Seaman is undertaking the challenge from August 5 to 9.

He is appealing for volunteers and materials so that a wooded area can be reclaimed in the grounds of Canon's House, a respite care home for children with disabilities in Belle Vue Road, Devizes.

The site, a clearing among trees, is very overgrown. The volunteers will have to create wheelchair friendly paths through the trees, put in hard standing and tables, install a water feature and turf a central area.

In addition, wind chimes, bird boxes and sensory plants will be put in, but the intention is to keep most of the wood as a nature area.

Listeners of BBC Wiltshire Sound nominated projects and Canon's House was a popular choice.

John Marshall, of BBC Wiltshire Sound, who is working on the project with Graham Seaman, said: "As soon as we saw the woodland we thought it was such a shame children at Canon's House were not able to use it. We thought with a bit of work we could make it into a super facility."

The challenge will be broadcast live on Graham Seaman's programme each day. Anyone wanting to help or provide materials can call BBC Wiltshire Sound on 0845 3000 789.
