GOAL nets are the latest donation to Swindon Town's appeal to re-kit the County Ground.

Loyal fans and businesses have continued to give items ranging from a lawnmower, printers and computer equipment to paint, lever arch files and desk tidies since the appeal was launched in the Evening Advertiser nearly two weeks ago.

One fan, Mike McQueen, has even donated a nearly new 42-inch plasma screen.

Support has also been forthcoming from around the country with the goal nets donated by football magazine Four Four Two which is produced in Kent.

But the cash-strapped club still desperately needs other objects from its wish list and is relying on the goodwill of the public to help it spruce up the stadium before the start of the new season.

A renewed appeal has been made for pitch sprinklers, building equipment, a commercial dishwasher, a match day announcer's microphone, framed artwork and a 'nearly new' mountain bike for Dick Mackey's treatment room.

Mark Devlin, Town's chief executive, is also keen to get assistance from a specialist IT company to help upgrade the club's computer network and telephone system.

He said: "We are extremely grateful to the business community and supporters. The interest in Swindon Town is far-reaching but we are particularly interested in building bridges with businesses and supporters in Swindon and Wiltshire because that is the community we represent.

"We have been really inundated with offers of computers and printers, and people offering their time and professional services for free of charge for a period.

"We have also had everything from plasterboard to a myriad of stationery. There are enough post-it notes to last us years. The money we save on these items will be used elsewhere."

Mark Hanrahan is assistant manager at Four Four Two magazine and has been a Town fan since he was 10, even though he was born and brought up in Catford. He thought getting his company to donate the goal nets was a good way of giving something back to the club.

He said: "One of my uncles indoctrinated me into the faith when he took me to a Town match against Fulham.

"The football media has been criticised for not supporting grass roots football so we thought we would put our money where our mouth is and help a club in dire trouble."
