Two Warminster pensioners who were facing homelessness have been offered a new house thanks to the Wiltshire Times.

John Jones, 72, and his 80-year old aunt, Rose Scott, had been told that they would have to leave their home in Imber Road, Warminster, after their landlord sold the house.

They then approached West Wiltshire Housing Society, who said they had no houses available until September, two months after they had to leave their existing home.

But after the Wiltshire Times ran a story about the pensioners' plight, their landlord has said they can stay in the house until their new bungalow is ready. Mr Jones said: "We are over the moon.

"The bungalow sounds lovely and it is actually more convenient than where we are now, as it is nearer to our church.

"We would like to thank all the people at the Wiltshire Times and everybody else who has helped us.

"The move itself is a bit of a hassle, but we are very excited about the bungalow.

"It has a garden, so when we move there I will be able to continue my hobby of woodwork."

A spokesman for West Wiltshire Housing Society said: "We have now offered Mr Jones a two-bed bungalow on Queensway, Warminster, and we have negotiated with his current landlord to allow him to stay in his home until September 30.

"We will be doing all we can to prepare his new home in readiness for him moving in.

"We do take the needs of our tenants very seriously and will do all we can to help this tenant."

The bungalow is in dire need of redecorating and West Wiltshire Housing Society are arranging for contractors to go in and refurbish it before Mr Jones and his aunt move in.

Both pensioners are in ill health and only have £98 a week pension to survive on, so are especially relieved to have a roof over their heads this summer.

Mr Jones said: "I really cannot thank the Wiltshire Times enough for what they have done for us."
