ORGANISERS of a Golden Jubilee street party have handed over £1,200 to good causes.

The windfall for local charities was made possible largely by Swindon Council's last-minute decision to waive a planned £850 road closure fee.

The party in Ermin Street on Monday, June 3, cost £3,000 to stage and turned out to be one of the biggest Golden Jubilee street parties in the borough.

It featured entertainment on three stages, a tug-of-war contest, African drummers and a hog-roast.

Julie Burroughs, who organised the party with fellow resident Carol Hunter, said: "We were really chuffed to raise this amount of money."

She added: "It makes it all that bit more worthwhile to give something back.

"We were originally expecting just to raise enough money to cover our costs, so it's good to give something back to Swindon."

Swindon Women's Refuge and the Prospect Hospice were given £500 each, with the remainder going to St Margaret's Church in Stratton St Margaret.
