TEENAGER Gary Gunning robbed a man of his £1.20 bus fare as he waited at a town centre stop, it was claimed in court.

Swindon Crown Court was told yesterday that 18-year-old Gunning walked up to John Kane and demanded the cash from him on a Thursday night in March.

Mr Kane said he handed the money over because he was scared.

In what must be one of the lowest value cases ever heard at the court, Gunning, of Keynsham Walk, Park South, Swindon, pleads not guilty to a single charge of robbery.

Mr Kane said he was waiting near the bus stop on Princes Street, near the junction with Euclid Street, when he saw Gunning and a girl walking towards him.

He said that when Gunning told him to stand in the bus shelter he did so.

Mr Kane said: "He asked me the time and I told him it was 6.30pm.

"He started shouting and screaming at me. He was right up in my face, about six inches away. He asked me if I had any money."

Mr Kane said Gunning was acting aggressively and saying that his brother, Jamie Gunning, had committed suicide and he was looking for people who went to Jamie's school so he could beat them up.

"I told him I had heard of his brother's name," Mr Kane said. "He went to the same school as I did, which was Headlands."

Mr Kane said that he handed Gunning his full £1.20 bus fare.

He told the court that he used to work with the girl who was with Gunning at the time of the alleged robbery.

The jury of seven men and five women is due to retire to consider its verdict today.
