ALTHOUGH Nicole Holofcener's bleak chick flick Lovely and Amazing (15) doesn't quite live up to its title, it is still an enjoyable slice of life.

Dumpy housewife Jane Marks (Brenda Blethyn) goes under the surgeon's knife for a spot of liposuction. She hopes the operation will improve her chances of wooing a new husband and while she recovers, her three daughters struggle to cope in their own ways. Former homecoming queen Michelle (Catherine Keener) is bored by her loveless marriage, B-list actress Elizabeth (Emily Mortimer) is insecure about her body and eight-year-old Annie (Raven Goodwin) becomes obsessed with her appearance.

The interaction between the characters, and their myriad break-ups and make-ups, forms the backbone of Lovely and Amazing.

Holofcener threads the unfolding drama with moments of dour humour, building to a dramatic denouement. Kitchen sink drama, soap suds et al.
