RESIDENTS are still reeling a week after a mobile phone aerial was installed near children's bedrooms.

The 3.7m aerial sprung up unexpectedly on a roof next to Yard Court, Warminster and can be seen by more than 40 families who live nearby.

Residents are demanding a public inquiry because of its size and possible health effects.

Many thought the planning application had been withdrawn, and want mobile phone company Hutchison 3G to explain why it has suddenly appeared.

Resident Neville Lawrence, said: "They were up within four hours so we had little chance to do anything about it. It seems to be a fait accomplis because it has happened and we are not able to refuse. There were no letters or information sent to the public."

Warminster town councillor Paul Batchelor is pressing for a date for the public meeting.

He said: "Although the health risks have not been proved or disproved they could still be there.

"Even if they are not clear the lives of parents will probably still be shortened by three years because of all the worry about their kids. One bedroom is only about 15m away from the aerial."

Mike Davies, communications officer for Hutchison 3G said they try to make the installations as discreet as possible but they were needed to improve network coverage.

He said: "The building has been designated for telecoms developments. As far as we are concerned everything we've done is above board and it should be operational later this year.

Louise Knox, a spokesman for West Wiltshire District Council, said they were investigating the work to see if it meets all planning requirements. She said: "They gave 28 days notice of the work they intended to carry out, so if they are not in breach of this they are allowed to install it."
