Swindon Town legend Don Rogers seems set to reject the invitation to take over as manager at Devizes Town.

The current Pewsey Vale boss tops the wanted list at Nursteed Road following Brian Newlands' surprise resignation last week,

The Devizes board were hoping Rogers would fancy the challenge of a return to the Screwfix League and accept an offer by the weekend.

But Rogers told the Evening Advertiser that although Pewsey and Devizes play in parallel divisions, a switch between the two would be a step in the wrong direction.

He revealed: "I'm not interested to be honest I'm happy at Pewsey.

"We are moving forward, and it seems Devizes are going the other way after losing their best players over the summer."

Rogers rescued Pewsey from relegation to county football when he took charge 18 months ago.

He duly switched the club to the Hellenic League to reduce travelling, and gained promotion to the Premier Division in his first full season.

But Devizes' attempts to lure him appear to be futile and the board may have to switch their attention to other names on the shortlist to replace Newlands, who quit after seven years in charge.

Other contenders for the vacant post include ex-Frome Town boss Simon White, who parted company with the Somerset side after a bust up with the board in June.

White led Frome to promotion to the Screwfix Premier Division last season.

Newlands former assistant Martin Allen remains at the club and could also make the step up from his role as No. 2.
