DR MARTENS PREMIER LEAGUE: FORMER Tottenham Hotspur and England legend Jimmy Greaves gave diners an insight into his glittering professional career as Chippenham Town held their inaugural sports dinner on Monday night.

More than 100 guests attended the event at the Olympiad Leisure Centre and were treated to a string of lighthearted stories from Greaves, who is now one of Britain's most popular after dinner speakers.

Highlights included his on the field run-ins with legendary hardmen Ron Harris and Tommy Smith, and Greaves also poked fun at some of the high profile figures in the game today.

The evening also included an auction of football memorabilia.

Chairman and Spurs fan Malcolm Lyus enjoyed the evening, but feels there is still plenty of room for improvement. He said: "We don't know yet how much money we will have raised, but for a first venture it was very good and went very well.

"It is nice to hear someone like Jimmy Greaves talk. He was very down to earth and there was no arrogance there. He enjoyed himself and stayed to have a good laugh at the comedian.

"The prizes were very good, but the auction would have gone better had we had the bidders in the room.

"Next time we will do it on a Friday night and not a Monday and get all of the players there. We had 100 there but I reckon we could double that next time with a bit more advertising."
