FA VASE: FIRST half goals from ex-Cirencester Town duo Dave Godley and Steve Richardson sent Devizes into the second qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Vase at the expense of First Division hosts Wellington.

The victory sets up a home tie against fellow Screwfix Direct League Premier Division outfit Bishop Sutton on September 21 and maintains Devizes' unbeaten start to the campaign.

Manager Ray Baverstock was satisfied after seeing his side emerge from a tricky trip to Devon with their third win in four outings this term.

He said: "Over the 90 minutes all you want is a win. We didn't play particularly well, but sometimes you can be over-critical.

"When you look at it, they threw everything at us in the second half and it was just pleasing to get through at the end of the day.

"We've got Bishop Sutton in the next round and they haven't had the best of starts to the season. The competition is important to the club financially."

Wellington set up a tense finale when Simon Ingram converted a free kick 12 just before the hour mark. Baverstock felt his side would have been out of sight by that point had they been sharper in front of goal.

He said: "We missed a few chances and could have been three or four up by the time they scored.

"We are creating the chances ourselves, but have got to stop giving the other sides chances.

"The defence did okay on Saturday, but it is important that we don't lose our shape and we'll be working on that in training.

"We gave away a sloppy goal and they had nothing to lose, but we came away with the right result in the end and, in cup football, that's all that matters."

Devizes dominated the first period following a tight opening spell and their pressure told on 34 minutes when Godley's chip beat the home goalkeeper.

Defender Richardson doubled the visitors' lead six minutes later, muscling his way into the box to head home a corner.

Baverstock's men continued to control proceedings until they handed Wellington a lifeline in the 57th minute.

Debutant goalkeeper Callum Swann, deputising for regular number one Warren Jackson, carried the ball outside his area when making a goal kick and Ingram crashed home the resulting free kick to give the First Division side a glimmer of hope.

The Devizes defence held firm to secure victory, although Wellington's Graham Burne was only denied a leveller by a goalline clearance in injury time.

Devizes boss Baverstock hopes Cirencester Town sweeper Matty Goodwin will sign in time for his side's big FA Cup first qualifying round clash at home to Taunton Town on Saturday.

His side return to league action on Tuesday night when much-fancied Team Bath visit Nursteed Road, kick off 7.30pm.

The sides drew 2-2 at the University of Bath on August 24.

Said Baverstock: "They are a good side. We were 2-0 up at their place, but they absolutely battered us for 25 minutes in the second half and 2-2 up there was a good result.

"We've only played two league games so far and it will be good to catch up with it again."
