A ZEBRA crossing and mini roundabout is to be installed in Potterne in a bid to improve road safety.

The plans were approved by Wiltshire County Council's regulatory committee on Wednesday, despite mixed views among villagers.

A petition was signed by 100 people against the roundabout and two residents wrote letters of objection saying the roundabout and crossing would be in the wrong place and create more traffic problems.

Potterne Parish Council and six residents wrote in support of the plans.

The crossing and mini roundabout is to be located in The Butts, close to the junction of Silver Street.

Nigel and Dianne Lloyd, of The Butts, were among the objectors. They said the crossing and roundabout was in a dangerous location being on a bend and the brow of a hill.

They suggested the crossing should be moved 30 metres towards the former Bell pub and resiting the mini roundabout to Blackberry Lane.

But the parish council said it welcomed the measures as they would slow traffic down. Other supporters said the measures would provide a safer means of crossing the road for pupils.

County council officers said in a report that the crossing and roundabout would help to reduce traffic speeds.

The officers also said crossings close to mini roundabouts where speeds are controlled are generally safe.
