ENVIRONMENTALISTS in Cheltenham have written to Old Town nightclub Soda asking them to consider more appropriate means of promoting the venue.

Frans Middelkoop, chairman of the Tidy Cheltenham Group, claims promotional flyers from the club have been found under car windscreen wipers in the Lansdown area of town.

The practice has been denied by Soda owner Stephen Reid.

Mr Middelkoop said: "Many businesses in Cheltenham have been named and shamed by the Don't Rubbish Cheltenham Campaign since it was launched in May this year.

"The practice of putting flyers on windscreens creates an enormous amount of litter.

"Most of the flyers end up on the ground and have to be picked up individually by hand which is time-consuming and expensive."

Mr Reid said: "We do promote in Cheltenham, but we are aware placing leaflets under windscreen wipers of cars is illegal and wouldn't do it.

"It's all rather strange because we place flyers in clothes and record shops.

"I'm aware that people can get into trouble by doing this and we don't need the hassle."

The Tidy Cheltenham Group launched their campaign with the aim of making the spa town the cleanest in Britain by 2005.
