A LATE try robbed Chippenham of victory as they completed their pre-season preparations on Saturday 7 September.

The visitors defeated Chippenham 20-5 in May to win clinch promotion to South West One but, on Saturday's showing, could struggle to adjust to life at the higher level.

Chippenham took time to settle and it was Berry Hill who made the stronger start, going ahead through a penalty after some early pressure.

The hosts began to come to terms and compete with the heavier Berry Hill pack and a penalty from winger James Barnard levelled the scorers. Barnard then repeated the trick moments later to put his side in front for the first time.

Chippenham squandered a golden opportunity to add to their lead when former skipper Scott Sherratt's poor pass failed to find the waiting Gary Squires, and Berry Hill took full advantage with a converted try.

But the home side refused to buckle and quickly regained the lead when, from a quickly-taken tap penalty ten yards out, second row forward Kevin Thornton powered over the line to score.

Barnard's super touchline conversion gave Chippenham a three-point lead at the break.

Chippenham continued to dominate possession in the second half, but poor finishing and ill discipline denied them a deserved win.

A penalty kick to the corner five minutes from time set up a catch and drive opportunity for the visitors, and they went over to score the decisive try.

Chippenham celebrate ten years at their Allington Field home when they open their South West Two East league campaign against Amersham and Chiltern on Saturday, kick off 3pm.

The occasion will be market by a special members lunch before the game and a disco has been organised for the evening. Tickets are available from (01249) 446997.
