AN authoritative performance by the home pack was capped by an incisive display of running by the backs as Minety outplayed their neighbours.

There were flashes of brilliance from the home team, and while the visitors failed to score, there was a hat-trick of tries for Minety fullback Luke Huckin and a drive-over try for prop Andy Hurley.

Wootton Bassett got off to the worst possible start, fluffing the kick-off and then conceding a try by Huckin.

With the forwards consistently securing their own ball in the lineout and frequently pilfering their opponents', Minety enjoyed a steady supply of ball to run with.

Play became bogged down for a while as both sides made mistakes and the visitors concentrated on spoiling tactics. Bassett's single chance to score was lost when the ball carrier stepped into touch five metres from the try line.

The match came alight again after the interval as Minety upped the tempo.

They were awarded a penalty just in front of goal. Scrum-half Ian Northcott's kick hit the post, but although Bassett squandered possession and Andy Hurley helped himself to it and charged for the line.

A jinking run by Vaughan was followed by a perfectly timed pass out of the tackle some 15 metres short of the line. Arriving at speed, Huckin latched onto the ball and scooted over for his second try of the game.

His third came after another deft move by Vaughan, once again drawing the Bassett defence but this time at the last moment putting through a well-weighted kick ahead for the full-back to outpace all comers and ground the ball to score.

Minety begin their league campaign on Saturday at home to Colerne.
