THERE were reasonable weights in the Wilts Angling open at Fishponds House, with carp making up the weights.

Steve Gardiner, of Chippenham, won with an all-carp catch weighing 36lb 10oz taken on pole-fished pellets on a 14 hook.

Nicky Johns, of Trowbridge, was second with another carp catch weighing 26lb, taken on pole-fished white maggots on an 18 hook.

Terry Gatty, of Melksham, was third with a carp catch weighing 22 lb 14 oz taken on pole fished sweetcorn on a 14 hook.

Other placings: 4 Steve Sibley, Melksham, 22lb 8oz; 5 Gerald Lugg, Beckington, 19lb; 6 Mick Gunning, Trowbridge, 16lb 6oz.

The Lavington charity match fished at Merritts Lake on Sunday raised £100.

Carp made up the weights although catches were generally below their best.

Bob Gould, of Melksham, won with an all-carp catch weighing 65lb 8oz taken alternating with pole-fished sweetcorn and red maggots for a comfortable victory.

Keith Milne, of Devizes, was second with another carp catch weighing 34lb 6oz, taken on pole-fished casters on an 18 hook. He was followed by Graham Pearce, of Lavington, with a carp catch weighing 19lb 8oz, taken on pole-fished red maggots on an 18 hook.

Other placings: 4 Ray Sheridan, Devizes, 14lb ; 5 Terry Fell, Devizes, 13lb 6oz; 6 Brian Ellis, Melksham, 13lb 4oz.

Weights were fairly even in the Chippenham match fished on the Avon at Chippenham on Saturday.

Stuart White, of Chippenham, won with an all-chub catch weighing 14lb 2oz, taken on feeder-fished sweet corn.

Runner-up was Martin Dolman, of Calne, with a mixed catch of skimmers, roach and perch weighing 7lb 9oz, taken on stick floated casters on an 18 hook. He was followed by Mark Wooldridge, of Chippenham, with a mixed bag of roach and dace weighing 7lb 4oz, taken on stick-floated casters on an 18 hook.

Other placings: 4 Jason O'Dell, Wootton Bassett, 6lb 8oz; 5 Simon Fear, Calne, 6lb 7oz 8dm; 6 Mick Ash, Chippenham, 5lb 13oz.

Fish were hard to tempt in the Bradford open match fished on Saturday on the Avon at Barton Farm.

Mike Withey, of Westbury, chalked up another good win with a mixed catch of bream and perch weighing 8lb 2oz, taken on feeder fished fluorescent pinkies on a 22 hook. Dean Bird, of Bradford, was second with another bream and perch catch weighing 7lb 12oz 8dm, taken on feeder-fished chopped worm on an 18 hook.

There was a tie for third place between John Sudbury, of Melksham, and Ian Willetts, of Bradford, with catches of roach and perch weighing 4lb 3oz.

Other placings: 5 Steve Shaw, Trowbridge, 2lb 9oz; 6 Dave Foster, Bradford, and Howard Carpenter, Trowbridge, 2lb 3oz.

There was mixed sport in the Bradford match on the Avon at Staverton on Sunday.

Dean Adams, of Bradford, gained a comfortable win with a mixed catch of bream and roach weighing 19lb, taken on pole-fished red maggots on an 18 hook. Similar tactics gave runner-up spot to Neil Hounsell, of Trowbridge, with a mixed catch of roach, chub and perch weighing 10lb 13oz.

He was followed by Kevin Grant, of Trowbridge, with a mixed bag of roach and chub weighing 5lb 6oz, taken on pole-fished red maggots on an 18 hook.

British Legion took the team honours in their inter-club match with Airsprung on the Avon at Swineford on Sunday with a weight of 33lb 15oz 8dm to 22lb 7oz 8dm.

Individual honours went to Steve Cook, of British Legion, with a mixed catch of roach and chub weighing 12lb, taken on Avon floated hemp and tares. Mike Withey, of Westbury and fishing for Airsprung, was second with an all-roach catch weighing 6lb 2oz.
