FATAL accidents on Swindon's roads have become all too familiar over the past few years.

Perhaps the most tragic incident was in September 1991 when five youngsters were killed in Akers Way when a Ford Escort, driven by Shaun Gooch of Penhill, crashed into a bench where they were all sitting.

Investigations showed that the car had been travelling at 90 mph along the 40mph stretch of road near Hreod Parkway School moments before the fatal crash.

Paul Carr 16, Sheree Lear eight, Paula Barnes 15, Ian Lilley seven, and Belinda Brown 19, were killed and Gooch jailed for five years for causing death by dangerous driving.

And in January this year Andrew Pounder, 39, of Abbey View Road, Moredon, who was twice over the drink-drive limit when he knocked over and killed father-of-five Clive Walsh on the Great Western Way in November last year, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for death by careless driving.
