VIOLIN maker Nick Nourse has just finished his first ever Norwegian fiddle.

The Hardanger fiddle is used for playing traditional Scandinavian folk music and proved to be a challenge for the Chippenham craftsman.

Mr Nourse, 41, of Chamberlain Road, took six weeks to make it. He said: "It is very highly decorated and I had to look at photos in a Norwegian book."

The fiddle has nine strings instead of four and is very ornate with 180 pieces of mother of pearl and bone inlaid into the fingerboard.

The head of the instrument is shaped like a lion. It was used for the first time by a folk musician at the Old Road Tavern on Saturday night.

Mr Nourse has been making violins for 20 years after completing a course at the London College of Furniture.

The fiddle was made to order for a musician in Stevenage.
