PATIENTS concerned about the future of Marshfield Road Surgery can quiz health chief Barbara Smith at a special meeting on May 28.

Many patients at the surgery fear they could lose the services of GP Barney Williams after the Kennet and North Wiltshire Primary Health Care Trust threatened to withdraw his NHS contract over a dispute about out of hours care.

Mrs Smith, the PCT chief executive, has now agreed to talk with patients at St Paul's Church Hall in Chippenham from 7.30pm.

The session was organised by the Friends of Marshfield Road Surgery and vice-chairman Gwyn Comley said she was determined the meeting would be polite, although she understood feelings ran high. "It is the only chance we have, and Mrs Smith must be treated with dignity," she said.

While the dispute is ongoing, £11,000 has been deducted from the surgery's funding, resulting in cutbacks.

Dr Williams fears the PCT is trying to force him into early retirement but promised he would battle on for the sake of his patients. The PCT has refused to comment on the situation because it is a contractual dispute.
