VOLUNTEERS have stepped forward to work with youngsters after a successful appeal by the Gazette.

Box Parish Council is trying to set up a youth forum in an attempt to stop teenagers from under-age drinking and hanging around on the streets.

The council has been looking for a youth worker to liaise with youngsters and find out what facilities they want.

"The Gazette article was great and really helped," said Derek Lovell, the chairman of the parish council.

Notices were also placed around the parish and in the parish magazine.

One councillor has offered to help and two applications have been received for the youth worker post.

Mr Lovell said the applicants were currently being vetted.

The council decided something had to be done after more than 50 youths started gathering on the recreational ground on Fridays .

"There is no suitable place for them to go at night and we want to provide them with the right facilities," said Mr Lovell.

"We need to ask them what they want, not tell them what they can have."

But before a youth forum can be set up the council needs to appoint a youth worker.

The parish council is working with the Rev Richard Snow and Pam Brookes, the county council's Corsham community area youth development manager.

They are looking to recruit voluntary and paid part-time youth workers.
