A DIRECT appeal has been made to parents for their help in curbing boozing by teenagers in Pewsey.

It was made at the annual parish meeting held in the Bouverie Hall last Tuesday by Coun Denis Sweasey who chairs the village's Police Liaison Committee.

There is growing concern in Pewsey over teenagers consuming alcohol and as a result, behaving in an anti-social manner.

A recent parish council meeting was told by WPC Nikki Burt that police have had to ask Kennet to close the public toilets adjacent to the Bouverie Hall earlier on Fridays and Saturdays and when discos are held in the hall.

WPC Burt said teenagers are using the toilets to hide their bottles of alcoholic drinks which they are not allowed to take into the hall. She said bottles are being smashed in the toilets and broken glass and crisp bags put down the lavatories.

Coun Sweasey said he had been involved in joint talks between police, the county youth service and young offenders team about the problems Pewsey is continuing to experience from drunken youngsters.

He told the parish meeting: "We have looked at the whole question of vandalism and unsociable behaviour."

Coun Sweasey said there had been a reduction in vandalism around the recreation ground after police patrols had targeted the area.

He said: "Establishments that sell alcohol are being targeted but at the end of the day the parents of these people have a role to play in this."
