FANS' favourite Wayne Thorne celebrated signing a new one-year contract in style as he grabbed his first goal in Bluebirds colours on Monday night.

Thorne scored twice against Chippenham for Clevedon last term, but was made to wait until four minutes from the end of the last home game of the season to open his account for the club.

The left-back's fierce effort gave stand-in Welling goalkeeper Steve Sodje little chance and he was delighted to see the ball fly in.

Said Thorne: "I don't very often get in and around the box where I play, but I had a good first touch and the new keeper needed to be tested. He made bit of a mess of it, but I don't really care. It is my first goal on this ground and I'm very happy.

"It was a great result at the end of the day. The whole season has been absolutely great and it was our way of saying thank you to the fans. We saved the best until last.

"I have signed a contract and am here for another season. The fans have been great all season and it is a great little club."

Top scorer Martin Paul ended his long Hardenhuish Park goal drought when he bagged the hosts' second goal against Welling.

He said: "The stupid thing is that we've got one game to go and I'm probably back in a scoring streak again now.

"It is funny because after scoring one, everything falls back into place, like the touch and the turn that led to the third goal for Gareth. Now we've got a chance of finishing third. That would be a tremendous achievement, Tommy and Nobby should win awards for getting us there."

Paul set up the third goal for Gareth Davies, who was making only his third Chippenham start since tearing a groin muscle in September.

Said Davies: "I haven't really played football for seven months and the body is finding it hard. But we have a great bunch of lads and a great team spirit and that makes it easier.

"I think it showed again on Monday night in a few of the rucks we had. It was good to see reactions from the lads and we all backed each other up.

"Everyone was on top of each other in the celebrations after the goals, but the lads couldn't catch me for mine."
