WILTSHIRE LEAGUE CUP: CHIPPENHAM were unable to cash in on a dream start as their hopes of League Cup glory were shattered by Clevedon at Nursteed Road on Sunday 27 April.

The Bluebirds started well when Jo Ashurst played a long through ball for Harriet Titcombe to open the scoring inside the first minute.

Clevedon equalised in the ninth minute when Esmee Barry's shot lobbed shot bounced high off the hard ground, over keeper Becky Powell and dropped under the bar.

Powell was injured in her attempt to scramble the ball clear and received treatment for more than five minutes.

Chippenham found themselves coming under increasing pressure, Clevedon shooting just wide on the half hour, and Powell was called on to make an excellent one-on-one save.

Jess Pomfret forced a save from Michelle Rudd at the other end, but Chippenham found themselves under more pressure as the first half moved into 16 minutes of injury time.

The North Somerset side hit the post and top of the Chippenham bar but the scores remained level at the break.

Powell made a brave stop from Charlie Grimes after the interval, but was unable to prevent the same player giving Clevedon the lead moments later.

Titcombe came close to equalising with an overhead kick from Charlotte Johnson's cross but Clevedon broke away and Grimes added her second on 64 minutes.

Chippenham pulled a goal back with ten minutes to go when Titcombe's shot was spilled by Rudd and Pomfret was on hand to punish the mistake.

But Grimes ended Chippenham's hopes in the second minute of stoppage time when she broke away to complete her hat-trick.

Chippenham's final attack was broken down when Emily Snook who was brought down on the right by a late tackle. Referee Val Stockley awarded the free kick, but Snook's reaction brought her a yellow card.

WOTTTON Bassett U14s took the Wiltshire League Cup following a thrilling final at Devizes on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides started brightly and Chippenham showed early promise, before Bassett's Kelsey Johnson scored from a goalmouth scramble following a corner on 15 minutes.

Chippenham just could not find the equaliser despite plenty of pressure after the break.

Hannah Cox shot wide, Charlotte Willis crossed the ball across the face of goal, Kym Sanger headed over and Becky Watson slammed the ball against upright following a corner.

At the other end, Chippenham goalkeeper Dannielle Gingell made a double fisted save from point-blank range to deny Wootton Bassett.

Throwing everything forward to clinch a vital equaliser in the dying minutes, Chippenham were caught on the break when Rosie Spalding broke clear and calmly slotted the ball under Gingell to make it two.
